Clara's Carpet Chair

Clara's Carpet Chair

This chair belonged to my great grandmother, Clara Woolgar née Dawson 1858-1949. It is likely that it was purchased when she married in 1886. According to my mother, Clara always sat in this chair, rather than a more comfortable arm chair, often with a cat on her lap. Every evening she ate half an orange, divided into segments, two Osborne biscuits and drank a glass of milk, whilst sitting in this chair. The carpet is the original.

A couple of photographs survive where she appears to be sitting in this chair. A photo in family possession, of Clara in a padded chair, is a studio portrait, so that chair was a photographer’s prop.
